A new analysis of U. Census data has found that same-sex couples are more likely to be interracial or inter-ethnic compared to their heterosexual counterparts. Among the study’s other interesting findings: those same-sex couples which included a racial or ethnic minority were also more likely to be raising children, and the number of same-sex couple-led households increased at a faster rate between and compared to that of married or unmarried heterosexual households.
The new analysis was produced as a counterpart to ” Households and Families: ,” officially released by the U.
As acceptance of same-sex and interracial marriage increases, companies try to reach the ‘modern’ family.
Lesbian relationships can be great. But they can also be messy things. Women of color have been talking about it for decades, and some of the most valuable feminist writing on sexual politics has been written by lesbians of color. And yet het female friends will say to me, not quite joking, that lesbian relationships must be easier since both people in the relationship are women. Both being positioned as women in this world creates a level of shared understanding.
But the politics of difference can still be a challenge in lesbian relationships. British women do twice as much housework as British men, missing out on an estimated five hours of leisure time every week as a result. Not to mention the endless emotional labour women are overburdened with in a hetero family setting. Both are women, and neither brings the aggressive, domineering behavioural patterns that result from masculine socialisation.
But I can certainly understand the incentive, personally and politically. Life without men is pretty wonderful. But — glorious as it is — this is not the only truth.

A little over a year ago, I got together with a group of fellow black, gay friends in Chicago and decided to try and throw a monthly brunch that was exclusively for men who looked like us. For months, it kept growing without fail. People could invite whomever they wanted, but the main rule was, for the first few hours, the space had to be only men that identified as black and gay, and that other people could join after 3pm.
Over time, the brunch become a safe space for us, who generally felt like we had none — not in LGBT spaces, and not in black ones. Brunch is our place to breath a little easier. Recently, one of the people that is a leader in making this brunch continue — now with less frequency — and I were talking about the love lives of the men involved.
Race fetishism isn’t specific to the queer community — but it is a little different. Sometimes, cis straight people fetishize interracial relationships.
Although it is commonly believed that gays and lesbians are more racially open-minded than straights, this appears to be true only for lesbians. Generally, white gay men and straight women avoid non-white daters. In a study published in the upcoming issue of the journal Social Forces , UMass Amherst associate dean Jennifer Lundquist and University of Texas Austin assistant professor of sociology Ken-Hou Lin analyzed the racial characteristics of 9 million registered users and million messages from one of the largest and most popular U.
The final sample consisted of data from 32, lesbians, 51, gay men, , straight women and , straight men taken from November to October In this study they examine the preferences of white daters; their ongoing research also examines the racial preferences of non-white daters. They found that same-race preferences are common, but when people decide to contact daters of a different race there is no clear tendency by gay or straight identity. Minority men are less desired by white gay men and straight women, while minority women suffer far less of a penalty from white lesbians and straight men.
The study found some variations in the specifics of interracial relationships.

And of all those who are tied down to committed relationships, we can think of very few interracial partnerships within the mix. But to be automatically rejected due to preconceived notions about who someone is sexually, or their gender identity, or the colour of their skin is just wrong. And this usually means they have already decided who that person is long before giving them a fair chance.
However, there is still a visible divide among lesbians and that probably has more to do with the fact that the most visible lesbians are still those highly representative of the white middle to upper classes. Rarely do we see lesbians of colour accurately or well represented within LGBT community.

She had just spoken to her oldest and dearest girlfriend. My friend’s reaction was not unusual as a response to black women who “come out of the closet. But usually it has been gay black men who suffer the brunt of society’s ostracism and ridicule. What of gay black women? Black lesbians have long existed on the fringes of the homosexual culture, the often overlooked foot soldiers on the battlefield for gay rights.
Gay black women are neither as visible nor as organized as their white counterparts. Yet their lives reflect the often overwhelming pressures of enduring the triple threat of discrimination based on racism, sexism and homophobia. In the black community, gay black women are shunned as freaks and as traitors in the struggle to rebuild the black family.
Yet contrary to conventional wisdom, gay black women are not “rebelling” against convention because of any supposed lack of “good” black men. Rather, they are affirming a lifestyle that, despite making their relations with the straight world difficult, gives them a sense of identity and belonging among their peers. Interracial Lesbian Dating: Am I Her Fetish?
I begin this piece on interracial dating with this disclosure because dating for me has always been political. To me, interracial dating can mean people of color dating white folks, and it can also mean different communities of color dating or partnering with one another. I cannot speak to dating other people of color outside of my ethnicity because I have never done so.

Why is interracial dating a taboo in the LGBT community? I’m asking a serious question, there are sub reddits I will not name here, but lets say they show their true colors about this topic. I can see the mindset of racists for heterosexual couples, they don’t want race mixing which is an irrational fear but homosexuals don’t procreate duh so why is it such a big problem? I personally feel that the gay community shouldn’t resort to racism and pettiness, we’re stronger together and its sad that racism trickles down to other minority communities.
I flat out don;t go to certain subs anymore, I have preferences and I know no one cares except me, I find pathetic that you’re not allowed to have preferences and you get called a “fetishizer”. Uh, it isn’t. There is a dramatically higher level of interracial dating in the LGBT community than straight folks. Maybe your local LGBT community is weirdly racist, but in costal American cities, it’s a rainbow party.
The LGBT certainly has racism and racist because it is a community made up of humans, and humans sometimes suck, but as far as I know, there is no evidence of higher levels of racism than the general population. There is a very defined line between what is considered a “preference” and what is considered to be flat out racism. For example, saying “I prefer latino men.

Sexual racism is an individual’s sexual preference for specific races. It is an inclination towards or against potential sexual or romantic partners on the basis of perceived racial identity. Although discrimination among partners based on perceived racial identity is characterized by some as a form of racism , it is presented as a matter of preference by others. The origins of sexual racism can be explained by looking at its history, especially in the US, where the abolition of slavery and the Reconstruction Era had significant impacts on interracial mixing.
Public opinion of interracial marriage and relationships have increased in positivity in the last 50 years. After the abolition of slavery in , white Americans showed an increasing fear of racial mixture. There was a widely held belief that uncontrollable lust threatens the purity of the nation. This increased white anxiety about interracial sex, and has been described through Montesquieu ‘s climatic theory in his book the Spirit of the Laws , which explains how people from different climates have different temperaments, “The inhabitants of warm countries are, like old men, timorous; the people in cold countries are, like young men, brave.
As the men were not used to the extremely hot climate they misinterpreted the women’s lack of clothing for vulgarity. This created tension, implying that white men were having sex with black women because they were more lustful, and in turn black men would lust after white women in the same way. There are a few potential reasons as to why such strong ideas on interracial sex developed.
