Dear Damona: Is it racist if I don’t want to date outside my own race?
This question has been derided by some as unfair so much for the tolerant left! Why should it matter, they posit, if love conquers all? But to me, the inquiry felt completely reasonable. To that end, I have continuously sought to explore love as a political choice. Relationships affirm your values—or as grandmothers everywhere would say, you are the company you keep. As a young Black woman, my choice of company is uniquely scrutinized. I have been fascinated by the extent to which people project their hopes and fears for the state of the union onto my interracial union. According to a Pew Research Center survey, nearly half of Americans think that interracial relationships are either good or bad for society.
Interracial couples: People stare and nudge each other
When you marry someone, you marry everything that made them who they are, including their culture and race. While marrying someone of a different race can have added challenges, if you go in with your eyes and heart wide open, you can face those challenges together and come out stronger. Here are a few things I’ve learned:.
Back in , Ok Cupid released a much-talked-about study stating that Black women were at the bottom of the dating pool (next to Asian men).
It is very rewarding to love someone who is different from you in terms of race, culture, identity, religion, and more. When we are open with each other, we can broaden each other’s perspectives, approach the world in different ways, and even find that there is a connection in our differences. Unfortunately, interracial couples can still experience difficulties at times by virtue of the fact that racism exists in our society on a deep level. Ideally, love should have no bounds in this regard.
However, in reality, other people may harbor negativity or judgment about an interracial couple. Partners in an interracial marriage must take on these issues together while maintaining empathy and support for each other’s experiences. Interracial couples may also reach conflicts when asserting their values if they differ from each other’s, based on racial or cultural identity. There are strategies to help you better handle what comes your way when you are in an interracial marriage.
‘What’s wrong with white women?’: The vile abuse interracial couples receive
A kind, smart man who moves me, might be able to rock with me, regardless of race or ethnicity. The vast majority of my Black girlfriends exclusively and purposely date Black men, so I get a lot of questions about my UN-friendly dating roster and most of those questions are about the white dudes. Seeing specific movies is not a dating requirement for me.
You better know and love Stevie Wonder, though.
Alex Shea, a year-old black woman in Houston, was having trouble explaining to her boyfriend, who’s white, why she was feeling so.
Erin Gloria Ryan responds to a silly op-ed from Ralph Richard Banks suggesting black women date men of different races by rehashing some campus liberal sociology that implicitly embraces certain values I’m guessing she doesn’t actually buy into:. I have my doubts about whether Ryan would agree with the idea that romantic tastes are somehow entirely unmoored from social pressure about who constitutes a desirable partner if expressed in just about any other context.
Usually folks on the left are inherently skeptical of the role societal pressure plays in romantic interactions, but for some reason, when it comes to attraction based on race, that skepticism gets thrown out the window in favor of some guilty campus liberal nonsense rationalizing that self-imposed racial prohibitions on dating partners is somehow natural. One of Jay-Z’s most memorable lines on The Black Album is when he alludes to his successful status by virtue of the type of women now attracted to him “all the wavy light-skinned girls is loving me now”.
In his book, he elaborates:. Skip to main content. Subscribe Donate My Account. This isn’t economic policy; love isn’t a logical decision; if you told me that men with blue eyes were much less likely to produce offspring who get cancer than men with brown eyes, I wouldn’t be able to logic my way out of preferring the latter. A short girl who loves dating tall men won’t suddenly like short guys because someone tells her that the physics of sex with a man close to your height can make the act more fun for all involved parties.
I can’t suddenly think my way into falling in love with some rich guy I work with because he would be a better provider. The heart wants what it wants.
Interracial dating exposes divide between teens and parents
Less than 3 percent of all marriages were interracial in , and the public generally disapproved of such unions. Interracial marriage was even illegal in at least 15 U. Although the U. Supreme Court ruled that laws prohibiting interracial marriages were unconstitutional in , a reported 72 percent of southern white Americans and 42 percent of northern whites said they supported an outright ban on interracial relationships.
Not surprisingly, this transformation is most evident among young people. As the education and income gaps between racial and ethnic groups shrank, so did the social distance between them.
Unfortunately, interracial couples can still experience difficulties at times by virtue of the fact that racism exists in our society on a deep level.
What do each of these laws have in common? They each wear blonde meaning and perms, and they each have either bleached their skin or wear certain family to appear whiter. And because of this, the media deems them as being beautiful. The downside of this is that because why many of our women are adopting these European arguments of beauty, it has trained our men to be attracted to Negative features rather than African features. Against black men are already bombarded with commercials and ads tv, online and print that promote European women; when they see black women trying to look like these women, it subconsciously trains them to go after european women.
They feel like if our effects are going to try to look like Europeans, then they might as well get the real thing. Therefore, it makes them think of themselves as ugly because they are black. As a result, many black women have set out to lighten their skin color and alter their physical arguments to look European so they can be perceived as beautiful by black men.

I vented to this man about how tedious it was to educate, argue, and see my experiences belittled, and he was an amazing listener. He seemed uncomfortable with reminders that he experienced privilege. By comparison, when I dated a black woman shortly after, she could better empathize with my stories, because they were hers too. She knew that I was frustrated with a system that awards privilege based on something as arbitrary as skin color.
She was exasperated alongside me. There was space to vent without having to reassure someone through their guilt or discomfort. Since President Trump took office, interracial dating has become even more uncertain for me. When someone flirts with me at a bar, the impacts of this very unconventional presidency almost always come up.
